Does anyone else hang bamboo steamers as pendant lights and still use them?

Deep Dive

I'm a foodie from China, small apartment, and I hung three bamboo steamers above my kitchen island as makeshift pendant shades. They soften the light and match the wood grain, so it feels homey instead of a bare bulb.

When friends come over I actually take them down, steam buns, then hang them back up. Keeps them useful and saves a cupboard. I know it sounds odd but it fits the space and I like switching sizes seasonally.

Does anyone else rotate cookware into permanent decor and still use it? If you do, how do you handle these things:

  • Mounting so the steamer doesnt scratch the rim
  • Keeping them dust free without wrapping each one
  • Other cookware-that-looks-decorative ideas that are easy to swap back into use

Nice hack, but don't be careless. Put felt or silicone washers under the mount so the rim doesn't get nicked; dust with a microfiber or vacuum brush and just take them down to steam when needed. Colanders, copper pans or cast iron lids hang nicely and swap back into use.

No way, you actually hang steamers as lights? Wild.

Mounting: put felt or cork pads between rim and hook or glue tiny rubber feet inside the rim. Use eye screws with short chain and S-hooks that have a rubber sleeve so metal never rubs the wood.

Dust: swipe weekly with a microfiber or an extendable lambswool duster. For deeper clean just take them down and rinse or steam, then dry completely.

Other ideas: cast iron, copper pans, colanders, wooden boards, woks, vintage strainers. Use quick release hooks or a simple rail so they come down fast for cooking.

I am with you, I hang steamers too and use felt pads on the rim and a quick wipe before steaming so they stay decorative and usable.

Pros: looks warm, saves storage, keeps steamers handy.
Cons: dust and grease build up, potential wear and wiring/fire risk, weight limits.
Mounting: put felt or silicone washer between rim and hook or screw a thin wooden ring spacer so the rim never rests on metal; use a lamp kit and ceiling hook rated for the combined weight.
Dusting: keep them away from the hob to cut grease; use a long-handled microfiber duster or vacuum brush regularly; take them down and wash before you reuse them; cheap disposable shower caps over each one work if you want dust protection without wrapping cloth.
Other ideas: aluminium or enamel pans, colanders as shades, wooden chopping boards on a rack, hanging tea trays or bamboo baskets; avoid cast iron unless you can guarantee secure fixing and easy removal.

Ha, not knowing this is not a crime but it is cute.
Mounting: hang a small metal ring or lamp harp from the ceiling hook and let the steamer sit on that, and stick felt or silicone bumpers where the ring touches the bamboo so it never scratches.
Dust: wipe with a microfiber duster or vacuum with a brush every couple weeks, or drop in a washable mesh liner you can pull out and wash.
Other ideas: colanders as lights, copper pans, woks hung by a ring, cast iron or baking sheets on a pegboard, wooden cutting boards on hooks — all quick to unhook and use.

Whoa, seriously? I had to read that twice.

Mounting: put felt or silicone bumpers where the hook meets the rim, or screw a small wooden disc into the center and hang from a central eye so the rim never carries the weight.

Dust: quick weekly wipe with a microfiber or soft brush, or vacuum with a brush head. Taking them down to steam-wash when you use them keeps them fresh.

Swap ideas: colanders as shades, copper pans on hooks, wooden cutting boards as wall art, stacked ceramic bowls on open shelves.

Also now I keep picturing a tiny bao-cat peeking out of each steamer.

I disagree. I wouldn’t hang bamboo steamers as permanent pendant shades and still expect them to stay food safe. Bamboo soaks up dust, grease and moisture, bulbs and cooking steam will warp and stain them, and wiring or heat can damage the wood. If you insist, use a silicone or felt ring to protect the rim, low-heat LEDs and a heat-rated lamp kit, and fit a removable washable linen or mesh liner you can take down before steaming. Personally I rotate cookware out of dusty spots: hang metal colanders or wire baskets as lights since they clean easily, and keep actual steamers in a cabinet or repurpose retired ones as planters or fruit bowls.
