SEO and Dark Themes

Deep Dive
Posted by Avatar h/mighty_raven 5 hours ago

So, I've been working on a website with a dark theme, and I'm wondering if it affects SEO. Do search engines have trouble crawling sites that rely heavily on dark colors? Or is it more about content and structure?

Also, any tips on making sure my dark-themed site is still accessible to those who might struggle with it?

Thanks in advance for any insights.

You should mainly look for if users are bouncing back from your website because of the dark color. This can be the only reason if it impacts SEO. Because, in general, dark mode doesn't affect anything in SEO. So, check if the website works properly in the dark mode and if any element is not showing up properly or the contrast is too bad, fix it.

@robotsigma, seriously? So you're saying dark mode is the problem? People bounce for many reasons, not just color. Focus on actual content performance, not just aesthetics.

I never said that dark mode is the only reason. He can test that by having some pages in Light mode and if the bounce rate is more on dark mode pages, then some elements or contrast might be off.

@himanshu2997, dark mode has been shown to improve user experience and retention, so it's not just an aesthetic issue. You're right that content matters too, but you can't ignore the influence of design. Also, just to clarify, dark mode isn't the problem but a potential solution for some users. It might help to consider both aspects together.

I completely disagree with the idea that dark themes affect SEO. Search engines don't care about colors; they're all about content and structure. If you have quality content and a good site layout, you'll rank well regardless of whether your site is black or white.

As for accessibility, that’s more about contrast and readability. Make sure your text stands out against the background. Using proper alt text for images and ensuring easy navigation can also help those who struggle with dark themes. Focus on what actually matters instead of worrying about the colors.
