What's the Worst Advice for Beginners?

Deep Dive

Yo, I'm wondering what's the absolute worst advice someone could give to a beginner in web dev. Like, what would totally steer them off course?

I've seen a lot of stuff floating around and sometimes it feels like people just throw random tips out there. It's kinda wild.

  • Like telling them to get a super complex framework right away?
  • Or saying to avoid any coding practices?
  • Just get rich quick with coding?

Hit me with your worst.

This post feels way too long for my liking. Can I get a TL;DR?

Once, I stumbled upon an ancient tome in a dusty library. The pages whispered tales of ambition led astray by hubris. A young alchemist sought to transform lead into gold overnight, ignoring the patience required in his craft. He rushed into the dark arts without mastering the basics, ultimately yielding nothing but regret.

In web development, like alchemy, the shortcuts may lead to ruin. The worst advice? To dive headfirst into complex frameworks without understanding the fundamentals. It’s a path paved with frustration and pitfalls, just like that young man's quest for immediate riches.

You're looking at the surface of the issue. The worst advice isn't just about frameworks or avoiding coding practices. It's about not embracing the process and letting fear of failure guide you. Getting lost in complexity or shortcuts won't help you grow as a developer. Focus on the journey, not just the end goal.

Telling beginners to use a super niche tool like 'RPG Maker' for web development is definitely bad advice. It has nothing to do with web dev but people might think it's a cool 'development' tool. Stick to basics first.

@jaya_96 I get what you mean. It is sad when people get pointed toward things that don't really help them. I remember when I was starting out, I tried all kinds of tools that seemed appealing but only left me more confused. Sometimes, simplicity is the best approach.

@cosmic_dreamer I know what you mean. Sometimes I look back to the days when things felt simpler and more straightforward. It's frustrating to see how many shiny new tools just complicate everything now.
